Hello friends of Mike Gobeli! First let me tell you that he is healing and on the road to recovery. You may know that while rock climbing Sunday with friends at the Cliffs in Allouez Township he fell some 150 feet. (While few do this and survive the insults – Our Mike has been recovering handsomely !)
There are not specific details about how this happened, but after a reported 80 foot "free fall" and another 70 feet of rock wall contact(s) he came to rest near one of the other climbers who immediately began rendering first aid. Emergency responders were able to remove him by securing him in a basket with a backboard and repelling down a steep grade.
Mike sustained head leg elbow and hand injuries as a result of the fall. He was transported to the hospital locally and then to Marquette where his fractured leg was operated on and his brain concussion (brain trauma) is being managed.
I pause now for you to take a deep breath – He’s a good strong kid and so full of life that even these injuries have not kept him down. He has already taken a few short walks aided by a walker and the concussion makes him quite sleepy. He has been communicating more frequently every day and currently resides in a low stimulation room as he has quite the hangover from hitting his head. His parents are with him and we think you will find that he is back in Chicago completing his miraculous recovery soon.
At this time we ask that you keep him in your thoughts and prayers, for time being he will not be answering texts or phone calls or emails. We must report that his cell phone was destroyed in the fall and for now has not been replaced . We are sure you will be receiving digital messages from him once this is replaced.
We will update you on his great progress and recovery, but for now please only cards to the house. We also appreciate all of your support as our hands have been quite full of Michael since Sunday.
